How can I protect myself from APP fraud?

The best defence against APP fraud is to spot the scam before making any payments. Although fraudsters use increasingly sophisticated tactics, there are questions you can ask yourself before making a payment:
1. Is the deal being offered too good to be true? For example, an unusually low price, large reward or an unbelievable offer with a lack of ‘catches’.
2. Is the communication a little odd? For example: were you expecting the communication? Is there anything unusual about the language or wording used? The vast majority of APP scams originate online (such as on social media sites).
3. Do you feel under pressure? The organisations that are typically impersonated by scammers don’t normally ask for money in short timescales. If you feel forced to send money, it may well be a coercion tactic.
4. Is the payment method familiar? Do you know the payee? Would you normally send this amount of money via a transfer?
5. Have you been asked for sensitive information? Remember to never give personal details over text or email.
Be wary of unexpected communications, particularly online. Take the time to think about whether the requested payment is one you really want to make., and pay close attention to any warnings during the payment process.
